OTOPLASTY (EAR SURGERY) IN ATLANTA
Ear contouring surgery (otoplasty) is performed to help patients improve their facial symmetry and proportions through the surgical enhancement of the ear structures. There are a number of motivating factors that might motivate patients to seek out ear contouring surgery, including:
- To correct ear malformations resulting from injury, trauma or genetics
- To enhance the overall cosmetic appearance of the ears
- To address and resolve problems of misshapen ear cartilage for both children and adults (children should be at least 4-6 years of age at the time of surgery, to ensure the ear structures are completely formed)
- To treat and correct the condition of overly large ears (macrotia)
- To correct and enhance the appearance of ears that protrude unilaterally (one ear) or bilaterally (both ears)
- To serve as a revisionary surgery for adult patients, improving upon the results of a previous otoplasty procedure
OTOPLASTY PROCEDURAL DETAILS
Your otoplasty procedure will be performed in an outpatient setting, under IV sedation, general anesthesia or a local anesthetic. During your surgery, Dr. Jones or Dr. Lovell will make small, inconspicuous incisions within the crease behind your ears, and will use sutures to fold your ear cartilage back to a more aesthetically pleasing position. When appropriate, they will augment the antihelical fold (located on the inner rim of the ear), and will gently remove any excess conchal cartilage and skin before closing the incisions. Our plastic surgeons employ the use of cutting edge surgical techniques to achieve natural-looking results and to avoid an unnatural or ‘pinned back’ appearance.
Ear Surgery Recovery
Although every patient’s recovery experience is unique, most patients find that they are able to return to work or school after 1-2 weeks, although you will be advised to refrain from vigorous physical activity for an additional 4-6 weeks. Dr. Jones or Dr. Lovell will prescribe pain medication for any discomfort, as well as antibiotic ointment to prevent infection. The initial surgical dressing must remain in place for 24 to 36 hours after the procedure—children may need to be monitored during this time to ensure the bandage is not removed. At your one-week follow-up appointment, you will be able to see the visible improvements to the shape and position of your ears, and these results will continue to improve over the next 4-6 weeks, as any lingering swelling subsides.
