Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia) in Atlanta

Gynecomastia Male Breast Reduction Surgery Atlanta | Buckhead | StockbridgeIncreasing awareness about the condition of gynecomastia (abnormally enlarged breasts in men), in conjunction with the declining stigma previously associated with male plastic surgery, have both contributed to the dramatic surge in the number of male breast reduction surgeries performed in America. While it does not pose any major health risks, gynecomastia accounts for more than 65% of all male breast disorders, and can have a profoundly detrimental impact on a man’s confidence and self-esteem levels.

Male breast enlargement may be present in one (unilaterally) or both (bilaterally) breasts, and cannot be improved through non-surgical measures, such as weight loss and exercise alone, because the abnormal breast growth linked to the condition of gynecomastia is not simply a result of too much fatty tissue. Men with gynecomastia have enlarged breasts because their body has produced too much glandular breast tissue, or a combination of excess breast tissue and fatty tissue.  Male breast enlargement can be attributed to a number of factors, including: the use of certain drugs and medications; hormonal changes; illnesses; and heredity.

Gynecomastia corrective surgery is an effective option for male patients with enlarged breasts who are seeking to flatten and improve their chest contours, while decreasing the size of their breast(s). When selecting a plastic surgeon to perform your male breast reduction, it is important to select an experienced physician who makes it a priority to stay up-to-date with the latest developments in the field of breast surgery. You will find these qualities in Dr. Wright A. Jones, a well-respected and compassionate plastic surgeon whose private practice services patients in and around Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Jones and Dr. Sabine Lovell employ cutting edge surgical techniques when performing male breast reduction procedures, and customize each surgery to ensure that the unique aesthetic goals of each patient are safely brought to fruition.

Male breast reduction surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, under either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. The underlying cause of the patient’s gynecomastia will determine which procedural techniques will be utilized during the male breast reduction surgery.  For patients whose gynecomastia symptoms are caused by excess glandular tissue, Dr. Jones or Dr. Lovell will make incisions in the breast region, and will then use surgical excision techniques to decrease the size of the breasts.  For patients whose gynecomastia is caused by surplus fatty tissue, our plastic surgeons will use liposuction techniques (either on their own, or in conjunction with excision techniques) to suction away the excess fat, thereby reducing the breast size.

After your male breast reduction surgery, Dr. Jones or Dr. Lovell will place dressings or bandages over the incisions, and will insert a small drain under the skin to siphon away excess fluid or blood.  You will be given a support garment to help minimize swelling, and will be able to gradually resume your normal activities as it becomes comfortable to do so over the next 2-4 weeks.

At Muse Plastic Surgery, Dr. Jones and Dr. Lovell focus not on changing the core aesthetic components of their patients, but rather on using cosmetic enhancement procedures to help them become the absolute best that they can be.  Our plastic surgeons believe in the importance of having well-informed patients, and will take the time to explain all of your male breast reduction options and procedural details, so that you feel completely comfortable going into your surgery.
