5 Frequently Asked Questions about Tummy Tucks

There are many reasons you would start to consider having tummy tuck surgery (also known as abdominoplasty). Maybe you just finished having your last child and are unhappy with your post-pregnancy body, or maybe you recently lost a ton of weight and want to reward yourself with cosmetic surgery to show off those new results.

Whatever reason you have for considering tummy tuck surgery, you will likely have a ton of questions when you first start thinking about whether a tummy tuck is right for you. We found that most of our patients who come into Muse Plastic Surgery with a tummy tuck in mind usually have these five questions.

    1) How Is a Tummy Tuck Performed?

This is a pretty standard question that most people have. After all, why wouldn’t you want to know exactly what was happening to your body during this procedure?

A tummy tuck starts with general anesthesia. Then, a series of incisions are made low on the bikini line and around the belly button. Your surgeon will use these incisions to tighten abdominal muscles (when necessary) to address diastasis recti. After the muscle has been managed, Dr. Jones will redrape your abdominal skin, excising any excess to create a smooth, contoured appearance.

Your incisions are then closed via sutures or skin adhesives, and you are sent on your way to begin your recovery process. These steps may vary depending on your unique conditions, but this is generally what most patients can expect.

    2) Where Are Tummy Tuck Scars Located?

One of the biggest concerns about tummy tuck surgery is the extent and appearance of scarring. Luckily, Dr. Jones has a wealth of experience and knowledge when it comes to tummy tuck procedures. He will make all of the incisions for your tummy tuck around your hips and pelvis inside the bikini line, which will be easily hidden by most undergarments and bathing suits.

In some rare cases where the amount of correction needed is minimal, a mini tummy tuck can be performed instead of a traditional tummy tuck. A mini tummy tuck requires significantly smaller incisions and consequently causes substantially less scarring. You can schedule a consultation to see if a mini tummy tuck is the right fit for your conditions.

    3) Is a Tummy Tuck Worth it?

There are some instances where patients may come to regret their surgery, but these are usually cases like breast or butt augmentation where a drastically new appearance is being created. However, a tummy tuck is not creating a new appearance as much as it is revealing what is already hiding underneath.

For this reason, there is a high satisfaction rate among tummy tuck patients, especially patients who choose to come to Muse Plastic Surgery in Atlanta, Georgia. Most patients consider this procedure’s cost to be worth having much more self-confidence and reclaiming their ideal body shape.

    4) Are Tummy Tuck Results Permanent?

The excess skin that is removed during a tummy tuck will always be gone, and the tightening of the muscles will remain taut unless an external factor loosens them once more. These external factors could include additional pregnancies or even weight gain.

But if you plan ahead and finish having children and maintain a healthy and active lifestyle, you can enjoy the results of your tummy tuck surgery for the rest of your life.

    5) How Long Is Tummy Tuck Recovery?

Since a tummy tuck is still a surgical procedure, it does require a significant amount of recovery time. Most patients make a full recovery between four and six months, but there are several stages you will go through during that time.

In the first day or two, you will be mostly confined to bed, and most rigorous activities should be avoided for a minimum of six to eight weeks or until cleared by your surgeon. During this time, you may experience varying levels of pain, discomfort and swelling, but prescription or over-the-counter medications are available to help ease those symptoms.

You must also give yourself enough time away from work to recover. Some patients find that they require up to a month off before they are able to return after their surgeries comfortably, but this also depends on what you do for a living and how quickly your body goes through the healing process. Generally, Dr. Wright Jones recommends that you allow two weeks off from desk work after your surgery.

Bonus Question: Can Tummy Tucks Be Combined With Other Procedures?

So, you are already sold on the idea of a tummy tuck, but what if you wanted to take care of some other problem areas around your body? Well, you are in luck: tummy tucks are often performed alongside other surgical procedures. This helps create balance and a sense of harmony throughout the body aesthetic. In fact, a Mommy Makeover is a combination of a tummy tuck and numerous other procedures that can be perfectly tailored to address your exact needs.

Here is a list of other procedures that are commonly performed alongside tummy tucks:

    • Breast Augmentation – Helps provide additional impact to the overall body contours
    • Breast Lift – Addresses similar sagging and excess tissue that is found around the tummy, creates a balance between the two areas
    • Body Lift – Addresses a much more extensive region of the body, including the back and buttocks
    • Georgia Peach Lift™ – Lifts and adds volume to the buttocks to better compliment the new tummy contours

The Georgia Peach Lift; Not Your Ordinary Brazilian Butt Lift

Recent years have seen an astounding rise in the popularity of an hourglass figure with curvaceous hips and full, firm buttocks. Celebrities like the Kardashians, Jennifer Lopez and Beyoncé have fueled the trend with their voluptuous figures, inspiring countless women to try to achieve their #glutegoals with butt-building diets and squat-heavy workout routines. Unfortunately, the natural approach frequently falls flat.

If you’ve had no luck achieving your desired buttocks shape and size at the gym, you’ve probably heard of the Brazilian Butt Lift. BBL surgery is in high demand, with women turning to natural buttock augmentation for show-stopping volume without implants. This buzzy butt enhancement technique uses a patient’s excess fat to give their derrière a smoother, shapelier and more lifted look.

At Muse Plastic Surgery, Dr. Wright Jones has developed his own signature BBL: the Georgia Peach Lift. Dr. Jones’ technique focuses on creating unique, noticeable, and flattering results while avoiding outcomes that appear overdone or unnatural. Find out more about the Georgia Peach Lift and how it compares to the standard BBL technique below.

BBL vs Georgia Peach Lift — What Is It?

The Brazilian Butt Lift is a two-stage procedure. In the first phase, fat is harvested from a donor site on the patient’s body (typically the abdomen or upper hip area) using liposuction. The fat is then purified for use in the second phase, when it is reinjected into the buttocks to add volume and improve contours, firmness, symmetry and proportion. BBL surgery has the dual benefits of enhancing the buttocks and slimming the area where the fat is removed. The Georgia Peach Lift follows the same basic steps for a two-in-one body-boosting impact, with slightly modified aesthetic goals.

BBL vs Georgia Peach Lift — What Does It Do?

A Brazilian Butt Lift or Georgia Peach Lift can:

    • Add volume to all or part of the buttocks
    • Improve shape and curve
    • Fill in divots or correct asymmetry
    • Lift a sagging butt
    • Add projection to flat or deflated buttocks
    • Create a more fit or sensual silhouette

BBL vs Georgia Peach Lift — What Happens During Surgery?

Dr. Jones performs both techniques under general anesthesia in an outpatient setting. The procedure takes two to three hours, depending on the complexity and scope of the surgery.

In the first part of the procedure, Dr. Jones injects tumescent fluid into the donor site and uses a cannula to remove the fat. He may use one donor site or multiple donor sites depending on the amount of fat needed. After it is extracted, the fat is processed and purified to prepare it for transfer to the buttocks. Dr. Jones then injects the sterilized fat into the deep fatty tissue of the gluteal region.

One of the key differences between the standard BBL and the Georgia Peach Lift is where the fat is injected. In a classic BBL, the fat is often injected to achieve an upside-down heart shape, with a narrow waistline and greater protrusion in the hips and lower region of the buttocks. In a Georgia Peach Lift, Dr. Jones modifies his approach to create a look more akin to a peach, with fullness in the upper, mid and lower buttocks and above average — but not extreme — body proportions.

BBL vs Georgia Peach Lift — Who Is Qualified to Perform the Procedure?

Brazilian Butt Lift surgery should be performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon in an accredited surgical facility. Because it is a well-known technique, a larger number of plastic surgeons have the training, experience and eye for aesthetic detail needed to deliver a safe and attractive BBL result. The Georgia Peach Lift is a proprietary approach developed by Dr. Jones. He is the only surgeon qualified to perform this technique.

BBL vs Georgia Peach Lift — How Long Is Recovery?

Recovery length and restrictions are similar regardless of which technique you choose. After a BBL or Georgia Peach Lift, patients are required to wear a special compression garment and avoid sitting directly on their buttocks as much as possible. Most of Dr. Jones’ patients are comfortable returning to work within two weeks. Exact recovery times vary depending upon the extent of the surgery and the unique rate at which each patient’s body heals.

BBL vs Georgia Peach Lift — What Are the Expected Results?

Every buttock augmentation procedure is custom-tailored to the individual’s goals and physique. Brazilian Butt Lift surgery can be subtle or dramatic, depending on the patient’s aesthetic tastes and how much fat they have available to transfer. Some BBL patients prefer a natural but slightly more exaggerated look. With Dr. Jones’ Georgia Peach Lift technique, the increase in projection is significant but not extreme. The goal of the procedure is to enhance the gluteal shape and size and improve the body’s proportions without appearing artificial.

BBL vs Georgia Peach Lift — Are There Scars?

Any time an incision is made, a scar is possible. The incisions used in both of these techniques are small and the scars are virtually unnoticeable on many patients once they’ve matured. The Georgia Peach Lift involves no incisions in the exposed areas of the lower back, which is commonly seen in traditional BBLs, giving it an even better cosmetic result.

BBL vs Georgia Peach Lift — Are the Results Permanent?

Both techniques deliver beautiful, long-lasting gluteal enhancement. There will likely be some fat loss during initial healing. The fat that survives the transfer can remain for many years. Patients who maintain healthy, active lifestyles see the most longevity from their BBL or Georgia Peach Lift results.

BBL vs Georgia Peach Lift — Which One Is Right for Me?

With Dr. Jones’ artistry and cutting-edge techniques, gorgeous glutes can be accomplished with either approach. Dr. Jones will take the time to explain all of your buttock augmentation options so that you feel confident you’re making the decision that’s right for you. As a general rule, the Georgia Peach Lift is ideal for more conservative patients who desire larger buttocks with proportionate curves that can be appreciated in a cocktail dress or a pair of jeans, while the classic BBL may be preferred by patients seeking more significant changes in size and projection.

Are you a candidate for SmartLipo Laser Liposuction?

Are you a candidate for SmartLipo Laser Liposuction? | Atlanta SurgerySmartLipo laser liposuction is a relatively less invasive way to eliminate unwanted fat pockets in certain areas of the body. At the time of initial consultation, your body contouring surgeon will determine whether you are a good candidate for traditional liposuction or SmartLipo laser treatment.

Muse Plastic Surgery, led by double board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Wright Jones, provides SmartLipo laser liposuction to patients in Atlanta, Buckhead, Stockbridge, Marietta, GA, and surrounding locations.

You should be in good general health and not suffering any medical condition that could pose risk during your surgery or recovery. Your body weight for SmartLipo laser liposuction should within 25 pounds of your ideal weight, but there can be exceptions to this thumb rule.

Your surgeon will evaluate whether your fat pockets are unresponsive to diet and exercise, and consider your fat reduction goals to determine whether SmartLipo laser is the right choice for you. In general, you should be above the age of 18 to be considered as a candidate for this surgery.

Who is Not a Candidate for SmartLipo?

    • Individuals who are excessively overweight or obese (with a BMI of 30 or above)
    • Pregnant women or nursing moms
    • Patients who are unable to stop their prescribed blood thinning drugs
    • People who are allergic to a local anesthetic (lidocaine) if the surgeon plans to use it for their SmartLipo surgery

Plastic surgeon to the stars Dr. Jones will prioritize your safety over all other considerations while determining your candidacy for SmartLipo.

    Teens and SmartLipo Laser

In exceptional situations, the surgeon may agree to perform SmartLipo laser liposuction on a teenager. They will consider the teen candidate’s self-esteem and their emotional maturity to assess if they are ready for this procedure. In many cases, a teen may only have one problem area of treatment.

For instance, the teen candidate may be bothered by the presence of excess fatty tissue in the hips, the chest area, or below the chin. This may be causing them embarrassment in social settings or affecting their self-confidence. In these situations, a targeted SmartLipo laser liposuction may be safe and beneficial for the teen candidate.

    Adult Candidates

SmartLipo laser liposuction cosmetic surgery can be perform on adults of any age, as long as they are in good health. Age is not a criterion for adult candidacy, but medical condition and the ability of a patient to sustain through the surgery, anesthesia and recovery are important conditions to be fulfilled.

In some cases, the plastic surgeon may decide to consult with the candidate’s primary care physician before deciding on their candidacy for SmartLipo fat reduction. Ideal candidates will have realistic expectations, and will know that SmartLipo laser is not a weight loss procedure but a fat loss surgery.

SmartLipo is also meant to remove stubborn fat deposits, but it will not tighten loose skin. Therefore, if the candidate has too much skin laxity in the affected area, they may have to combine SmartLipo with a body lift surgery. Older candidates may particularly face this issue.
