Scar Revision Treatment – Chemical Peels

Scar Revision Treatment – Chemical Peels

Scar Revision Treatment - Chemical Peels | Atlanta | BuckheadChemical peels soften the appearance of mild scarring through the use of a chemical solution to eliminate the outer layer of damaged skin. The new skin that develops in place of the compromised skin is typically smoother and less uneven in appearance.

Chemical peels provide patients with a relatively cost-effective option for improving the appearance of scars. Light-haired and fair-complexioned patients are good candidates for the procedure.

Muse Plastic Surgery, led by double board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Wright Jones, provides scar revision treatments to patients in Atlanta, Buckhead, Stockbridge, Marietta, GA, and surrounding locations.

Benefits

Chemical peels offer the following benefits to acne-prone skin:

  • lightening of dark spots
  • smoother tone and texture
  • unclogging of pores for the prevention future breakouts

Chemical peels eliminate the uppermost skin layer, allowing new, smoother skin to reveal itself.

In general, chemical peels can be an effective solution for the maintenance and rejuvenation of the skin. The injury caused by the chemical kills and eliminates dead skin cells at the surface. The intentional damage inflicted by these peels also triggers the body’s natural response to manufacture collagen, which can help fill in acne scars.

Chemical peels, as a rule of thumb, might not be suitable for severely elevated or depressed scars. Plastic surgeon to the stars Dr. Wright Jones will take care to ensure the patient is a right candidate for this treatment.

Procedure

The provider will cleanse the skin. Then they will apply one or more chemical solutions to the cleansed skin. These applications create a controlled injury, which enables new, more youthful skin to emerge.

A majority of patients experience a burning sensation that lasts around five to ten minutes, followed by a stinging sensation. The application of cool compresses may alleviate this stinging. A deeper peel may necessitate pain drugs during or after the treatment.

How to Prepare for the Procedure

Prior to the procedure, the provider will typically review the patient’s health history and undertake a physical examination. They will also discuss the potential results and risks of the procedure. In addition, patients should:

  • Discuss their aging skin condition and treatment objectives to establish the depth of the chemical peel
  • Disclose any history of scarring, facial X-rays, or persistent cold sores
  • Avoid any meds or supplements that can impact blood clotting, such as ibuprofen, aspirin, or vitamin E, for ten days prior to the procedure
  • Avoid the use of drugs such as Retin-A, Renova or glycolic acid
  • Determine beforehand if they will require someone to drive them home after the procedure

What to Expect After the Procedure

Afterward, patients experience a reaction similar to sunburn in the treatment area. Patients may experience:

  • Redness, followed by scaling within three to seven days
  • Inflammation
  • Blisters that will crust, turn brown, and peel off within seven to 14 days after medium and deep peels
  • Bandages over the treated site for several days
  • Patients will need to avoid the sun for several months after the procedure
  • Light peels may be repeated and spaced apart one to four weeks. Medium peels may be repeated every six months to one year.

The treatment effects will depend on various factors. According to research undertaken in Asian populations, chemical peels may be a suitable treatment for acne scars in people with lighter complexions.

Darker-skinned people may need to be more careful in the type of peel they choose. In case they are experiencing melasma (a hyperpigmentation disorder), research indicates that traditional glycolic peels may be more suitable in such cases.

Scar Revision Treatment – Laser/Light Therapy

Scar Revision Treatment - Laser/Light Therapy | Atlanta | BuckheadLaser therapy involves the use of targeted beams of light to treat damaged body areas. It can eliminate tumors and other growths, enhance vision, stop hair loss, and treat pain. This therapy can also soften the appearance of scars.

Muse Plastic Surgery, led by double board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Wright Jones, provides scar revision treatments to patients in Atlanta, Buckhead, Stockbridge, Marietta, GA, and surrounding communities.

What Scars can Laser or Light Therapy Treat?

Laser treatment for scars is an outpatient treatment. The doctor repeatedly maneuvers a laser wand over the skin to eliminate damaged skin cells and soften scars, including:

  • burn marks
  • injury scars
  • acne scars
  • age spots, dark spots, and other types of hyperpigmentation

As this procedure involves heat and light, the doctor may not recommend it if the patient has light sensitivity. Specific drugs can lead to this type of sensitivity. Patients should make sure to speak with their doctor to determine if they are suitable candidates.

If the patient takes blood thinners, the doctor may discourage laser therapy due to the risk of bleeding. Patients with the following characteristics may not be good candidates for laser therapy:

  • skin sores
  • active acne
  • darker skin

How do Laser Treatments for Scars Work?

Laser scar treatments do not make a scar disappear; rather, they are meant to make a scar less visible.

The body initiates the process of wound repair following a skin injury. A scab forms over the injury to protect it from germs and falls off eventually. At times, the skin beneath the scab is the same color as the rest of the body. But a scar often remains after a scab falls off, depending on the depth of the injury.

Such scars may become lighter or fade over time. But when a scar becomes permanent, laser therapy can help eliminate the outer layer of the compromised surface of the skin. These treatments smooth the skin to enhance its tone and appearance.

In addition, these lasers treat blood vessels in the scar tissue and mitigate redness. They can go into the surface of the skin to encourage the production of new skin cells as well. Plastic surgeon to the stars Dr. Wright Jones will customize the treatment according to the unique needs of a patient.

Procedures for Laser Treatments for Scars

At the time of the pre-treatment consultation, the doctor will determine the most appropriate procedure for softening a scar. The options may include the following:

Ablative or Laser Resurfacing

This therapy improves the appearance of wrinkles, warts, and scars. Resurfacing eliminates the outer skin layer and removes skin cells that have been damaged at the superficial skin level. The doctor may use a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser to treat deeper scars or an erbium laser for the treatment of superficial scars.

Fractionated Laser Resurfacing

A laser penetrates a deeper skin layer to eliminate dark, pigmented cells. In addition, this procedure enhances collagen production as well as skin cell renewal. This makes the scars appear less conspicuous.

Non-Ablative Laser Resurfacing

Infrared heat lasers penetrate the inner layer of the skin. This also stimulates collagen production and cell renewal to replace damaged skin cells.

Laser therapy for scars is an outpatient procedure. But the duration of the procedures differs. The patient can expect mild discomfort during the procedure. The doctor will apply a topical anesthetic to numb the site to ensure that the patient remains comfortable.

Scar Revision Treatment – Dermabrasion

Scar Revision Treatment - Dermabrasion | Atlanta | BuckheadMany skin issues that impact the face, such as the presence of elevated scars, can make the sufferer feel self-conscious in social settings.

Dermabrasion is an effective treatment to enhance the appearance and texture of the skin and recreate the confidence that has been eroded by skin aberrations.

Muse Plastic Surgery, led by double board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Wright Jones, provides scar revision treatments to patients in Atlanta, Buckhead, Stockbridge, Marietta, GA, and surrounding locations.

What is Dermabrasion?

Dermabrasion is a skin resurfacing technique often used to treat elevated and uneven scarring. It can dramatically improve the appearance of scars, such as those due to injuries, acne, or surgery. While acne scars are most commonly treated with this technique, most scars can be addressed if they are not excessively deep.

Dermabrasion can be performed as an independent treatment or in combination with surgical scar revision. This skin resurfacing procedure is used for other purposes as well, such as the treatment of age spots, uneven skin tone, sun-damage, tattoos, fine wrinkles, and precancerous skin patches.

Good dermabrasion candidates have light complexions as the procedure can cause a lightening of the skin called hypopigmentation. Patients who have darker complexions may not be suitable candidates but could benefit from CIT (collagen induction therapy).

Additionally, patients with a history of scar tissue overgrowth, burn scars, a current case of acne or those with specific skin or immune disorder conditions may also be unsuitable candidates for dermabrasion. An experienced cosmetic surgeon can enable the patient to understand if dermabrasion is appropriate for them.

The Dermabrasion Procedure

Dermabrasion is undertaken as an outpatient procedure using local anesthesia. Patients are asked to apply a topical cream daily to the treatment site two weeks before the procedure date. This helps prepare the area.

The time taken to complete the procedure is actually only around 15 minutes, but it may be performed in combination with other longer surgical procedures. A device with a fast rotating abrasive wheel exfoliates the superficial skin layer to reveal smoother, healthier skin.

Plastic surgeon to the stars Dr. Wright Jones provides scar revision treatments to suitable candidates who want to avoid surgery.

After Dermabrasion

During the initial five days after dermabrasion, the skin will transform from red to a lighter pink. The normal skin hue will slowly return over the next three months. In around one week to ten days after the treatment, smoother skin texture is visible.

The patient should take care of the treated skin and follow some simple directions to enhance the outcomes and help them remain comfortable. The recovery is not painful.

However, any discomfort can be managed with Tylenol or a pain drug prescribed by the doctor. To keep the area moisturized and safe from infection, an antibiotic cream may be applied twice every day.

The patient should also minimize activity during the remainder of the day and evening after dermabrasion. Resting or sleeping with the head raised with extra pillows will mitigate inflammation.

Risks

While most complications are quite rare, it is vital that patients are aware of them. These include bleeding, infection, scarring, and pigmentation issues. In case bleeding occurs, it can usually be managed by the application of light pressure.

Patients experiencing any of these problems should contact their doctor promptly. Celebrity plastic surgeon Dr. Wright Jones receives patients from Atlanta, Buckhead, Stockbridge, Marietta, GA, and nearby areas for scar revision treatments.
